Haiku Home

Haiku Home Japanese knife

If you have no experience in the kitchen or have never used a Japanese knife before, it's understandable that you would want to start with an easy-to-use knife to get familiar with it.

Haiku Home is an ideal choice for beginning cooks, as it offers a light cutting experience and excellent grip, typical of Japanese knives. This knife was designed to meet the expectations of moderate cooks, while still offering a common cutting quality. Because the handles are not cemented, they are not intended for heavy use in professional kitchens.

Haiku Home is a reassuring first step before moving on to the higher-end model, the Haiku Original. By that, customers easily understand the structure of products beyond technical perspective. You shouldn't expect it to be exceptionally sharp, that's not the target. But it will be at least on par with the Western mid-range, but lighter. For sharpening, we recommend keeping it very simple, as soon as you feel the knife loosing penetration, a manual sharpener will get it back in shape while waiting for a more permanent stone sharpening, or a visit to the sharpener.

Haiku Home is appreciated for its ecological aspect, as the handle can easily be changed by oneself if needed. It also opens up the possibility of upgrading to the quality of the Haiku Original bark heart handle (the only company to offer this service, Chroma France supplies handles for both on request). A dot of glue, and it's done.

There are many clones in the world, but the Haiku Home knife stands out because of the attention paid to its design by a small and very old family-owned structure in Seki, Japan, which has been manufacturing and subcontracting several grades for several brands for several decades. The difference is in the specifications, but the care and dedication to making beautiful products is the same. The company that produces it has that in its DNA. That's probably what sets this knife apart from its copies. Haiku Home is the first Japanese knife sold in Europe and as such it has a history. The history from which it draws its roots is immemorial in two ways, on a Japanese scale for its manufacturing and on a European scale for its marketing.

The handles of Haiku Home knives are made of the first, untreated raw wood layers. The handles of the ambidextrous blades are round, those of the beveled blades HH03 Deba and HH04 Sashimi, shinogi type (D-shaped). To improve the quality of the wood over time (and to reveal its grain), you can use a wood care product. A thin film is sufficient. This will prevent the wood from aging and premature deterioration, but beware that this raw wood is very absorbent. The other way would be to upgrade to a handle from the Haiku Original family which can be ordered from Chroma France.

Avoid leaving your knife exposed to UV rays and of course, no dishwasher, that goes without saying.
